What Is an AI Search Audit (and What Should Be Included)?

An AI search audit is a structured review of how well a brand, website, or organization shows up inside AI-powered search experiences—things like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other generative answer engines—and how those systems are interpreting and citing your content.

And that second part matters just as much as—if not more than—the first.

AI visibility isn’t only about appearing. It’s about how you’re framed when you do appear:

  • Are you described accurately?
  • Are you positioned as the best option?
  • Are you mentioned alongside competitors who shouldn’t even be in the same conversation?
  • Are you being cited as a source or paraphrased without attribution?

A strong AI search audit answers those questions with evidence, benchmarks, and a plan to increase citations.

What an AI Search Audit Actually Focuses On

There’s a misconception on LinkedIn that I’m seeing. A real AI search visibility audit isn’t just “SEO, but with vibes.” A good audit focuses on areas that map to how AI engines decide what to include in answers.

For the most part, you won’t see a technical SEO report attached to your AI visibility report. But, you walk away understanding:

1. How Often You Appear in AI-Generated Answers

An AI search audit measures whether you appear at all, how often you appear across a defined prompt set, where you appear (top recommendations vs. “other options”), and how consistent your appearance is across platforms.

Your first audit is your visibility baseline: how frequently your brand shows up when someone asks questions that match your business.

That includes looking at prompts like:

  • “Best [category] tools for [audience]”
  • “What is [concept] and why does it matter?”
  • “Alternatives to [competitor]”
  • “How do you choose a [service/provider]?”
  • “Top companies for [use case]”

If you don’t baseline this, you can’t confidently say, “We improved AI visibility.” You can only say, “It feels better” Which, if we’re being honest here, is not a strategy. It’s a prayer.

2. How You’re Described

This is where AI audits get spicy (and useful). Because it’s not just are we there? It’s what are we being called when we show up?

An AI search audit evaluates:

  • Accuracy: Does the AI describe your product or service correctly?
  • Positioning: Does it understand your differentiation?
  • Sentiment: Does the framing feel positive, neutral, skeptical, or weirdly backhanded?
  • Category clarity: Does it place you in the right category, or lump you into a vague bucket?

This matters because AI answers often become the first impression—the quick mental model someone carries into the rest of their research. If the AI gets your positioning wrong, you’re fighting uphill for the rest of the buyer journey.

3. Which Sources AI Tools Rely On in Your Niche

AI systems don’t “decide” in a vacuum. They pull patterns from sources they already trust.

A proper audit maps:

  • Which brands repeatedly show up for your core topics
  • Which publications, community sites, and blogs dominate citations
  • Which competitor pages are being referenced instead of yours
  • What types of content get selected (guides, glossary pages, comparisons, case studies, you get the drift.)

This is one of the biggest value-adds of an AI search audit: it shows you the real playing field.

Sometimes the answer is, “You’re not cited because you don’t have the right content format.” Other times it’s, “You’re not cited because you’re not present on the three sites that AI engines treat like gospel in your niche.”

You can’t fix what you can’t see.

4. Technical + Trust Signals That Influence Credibility

This is the “your site needs to be legible to machines” section—but not in the old-school, keyword-stuffing way.

AI audits should review the trust layer that impacts whether your content is treated as credible, including:

  • Entity consistency: Is your brand name, product names, and messaging consistent across your site and third-party profiles?
  • Structured data: Are you making it easy for systems to understand what your pages represent
  • Security and technical hygiene: Do you have a strong technical foundation?

Think of this as your brand’s technical credibility posture. It’s not always sparkly or fun, but absolutely part of why you get picked.

Is your brand earning AI Share of Voice—or being summarized away?

Traditional rankings and backlinks no longer determine who appears in AI-generated answers. Today, visibility depends on whether AI systems like Gemini and Perplexity understand, trust, and cite your brand as an authority.

If your brand isn’t showing up inside AI answers, it’s usually not a content volume problem.
It’s an entity and authority gap.

To help brands close that gap, I’m offering specialized AI Search Visibility Audits. This audit is designed to pinpoint where your brand is being overlooked, identify entity and PR gaps, and show you exactly what’s preventing AI systems from citing you.

What a Strong AI Search Audit Delivers

If an “AI search audit” ends with a vague checklist and a motivational quote, I regret to inform you: you did not buy an audit. You bought a blog post in PDF form.

Here’s what a strong audit actually includes.

1. A Visibility Snapshot (or Score)

This summarizes how often and how well you show up across major AI platforms. At a minimum, it should include:

  • The prompt set used, so it’s repeatable later
  • Your visibility rate (mentions divided by total prompts)
  • Whether you’re cited, recommended, or merely mentioned
  • Patterns in which topics trigger your appearance

This becomes your baseline and your reporting framework going forward.

2. A Citation Audit

This is the “who’s getting referenced and why” breakdown. A useful citation audit shows:

  • The top cited brands for your target prompt cluster
  • Which pages from those brands show up most
  • Where your site is missing (and what type of page would fill the gap)
  • Which competitor content is being rewarded with citations

This is where you discover the difference between “We need more content” and “We need this specific kind of asset in order to compete.”

3. Competitive Benchmarking

Visibility without context is meaningless. An AI search audit should compare you against your three to five most relevant competitors—and sometimes a category leader who isn’t a direct competitor, but who AI engines treat as the authority.

Benchmarking should cover:

  • Share of voice across prompts
  • How each competitor is positioned
  • Which sources and formats help them win visibility

This is where strategy becomes obvious. (And sometimes annoying, because it reveals your competitors are winning with content you’ve been putting off for 18 months.)

4. A Prioritized Action Plan (GEO Recommendations)

This is the part stakeholders actually want: what to do next, and in what order.

A strong action plan includes:

  • Priority fixes, quick wins, and foundational work
  • Content recommendations tied to citation gaps
  • On-site improvements tied to interpretability
  • Off-site recommendations, like where to publish, what to seed, what to reinforce

AI search visibility is probabilistic, so the best plans also include expected outcomes—not guarantees, but clear cause-and-effect logic.

Things like: “This should increase likelihood of citation for X topic” or “This should reduce misclassification of your product.”

How It Differs From a Normal SEO Audit

Traditional SEO audits are built for ranked pages in Google and Bing: technical health, indexability, keywords, backlinks, and performance across ten blue links.

An AI search audit looks at something different—direct answers.

Instead of “What do we rank for?” it asks:

  • Are we mentioned at all?
  • Are we framed accurately?
  • Are we cited as evidence?
  • Which sources are being used instead of us?
  • What signals would increase our likelihood of being selected as a trusted source?

This is the mental shift: SEO optimizes for ranking. AI search optimizes for being selected and summarized.

That’s why an AI search audit isn’t optional extra credit. It’s the missing diagnostic for how discovery is actually happening now.

A Simple Step-by-Step Audit Process

If you want the “how this works in the real world” view, here’s a clean baseline AI visibility audit process you can follow—or use to vet a vendor.

  • Step 1: Define the prompt set. Choose prompts across your funnel: definitions, comparisons, “best tools,” alternatives, and implementation questions.
  • Step 2: Run a baseline visibility scan. Record mentions, citations, positioning, and accuracy.
  • Step 3: Map citation patterns. Identify which domains and content types dominate.
  • Step 4: Benchmark competitors. Use the same prompt set and the same scoring criteria.
  • Step 5: Review on-site interpretability. Look at structure, clarity, entity signals, and content format.
  • Step 6: Review off-site signals. Third-party mentions, founder presence, communities, and platforms that AI engines pull from.
  • Step 7: Produce a prioritized plan. Quick wins plus foundational moves plus a content roadmap plus a measurement plan.

The Real Question an AI Audit Answers

An AI search audit tells you whether you’re present, understood, trusted, and cited in the places where buyers are getting answers now.

If you’re not showing up, the audit shows you why. If you are showing up, the audit shows you how to scale it and defend it.

And if someone tries to sell you an “AI audit” that’s really just a keyword export with a new name? Congratulations. You’ve spotted the scam.

If we haven’t met yet…

Hi, I’m Cassie, the fractional content strategist for early-stage startups, specializing in AI search visibility.

I build content programs that connect strategy with execution: clear positioning, systems, and content that actually drives revenue. If you’re ready to stop guessing and start growing, here’s how we can work together.

What is an AI search audit?

An AI search audit is a structured review of how well a brand shows up inside AI-powered search experiences like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity—and how those systems are interpreting and citing your content. It evaluates not just whether you appear, but whether you’re described accurately, positioned correctly, and cited as a trusted source.

How is an AI search audit different from a traditional SEO audit?

A traditional SEO audit focuses on rankings, backlinks, keywords, and technical health for search engine results pages. An AI search audit focuses on direct answers—whether your brand is mentioned, accurately framed, and cited inside AI-generated responses. SEO optimizes for ranking; AI search optimizes for being selected and summarized.

What should be included in an AI search audit?

A strong AI search audit should include a visibility snapshot (how often and where you appear across AI platforms), a citation audit (which domains and content types AI engines rely on in your niche), competitive benchmarking (your share of voice vs. competitors), and a prioritized action plan with GEO recommendations tied to your specific gaps.

Why does it matter how AI engines describe my brand?

AI-generated answers are often a buyer’s first impression of your brand. If an AI engine misclassifies your product, describes your positioning inaccurately, or lumps you in with the wrong competitors, you’re fighting uphill for the rest of the buyer journey—before they’ve even landed on your site.

How often should a brand run an AI search audit?

Because AI models are updated frequently and citation patterns shift, brands should run a baseline audit before making any content changes, then recheck every quarter—or sooner if there’s been a major product update, rebrand, or shift in competitive landscape. The prompt set established in your first audit makes it easy to repeat.

Can I run an AI search audit myself?

Yes—at a basic level. You can manually prompt ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini with questions your buyers would ask and record how your brand appears. A more thorough audit maps citation sources, benchmarks competitors, reviews on-site and off-site authority signals, and produces a prioritized GEO action plan, which typically benefits from expert guidance.
