The 3-to-6 Month Rule: How Often to Update Content for AI Search

We’ve all heard the same advice: you need to periodically update your older blog posts for extra freshness in the SERPs. But now that generative engines are at play, what are the new rules on how often you need to update content for AI search?
Recently, I had Josh Spilker, Head of Content and SEO at AirOps, on the Found in AI podcast. We talked about everything from the role of the content engineer to how often you should update your blog content for LLM indexing.
Posting a blog post to your website and hoping Google picks it up later on down the road will no longer cut it. AI engines need fresh content.
Here’s why.
Why “Freshness” Suddenly Matters Again
TL/DR: Update your content every 3-6 months for indexing in AI search engines.
Search isn’t static anymore. It’s conversational, dynamic, and constantly refreshed by AI.
Tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini don’t just index your content once and leave it there. Instead, these tools:
- Interpret it
- Summarize it
- Decide whether your insights are still relevant.
That means a blog post you published a year ago, even if it’s technically accurate, might no longer surface in AI search results. The content may be fine, but the context has lost its flavor.
So, how often do you need to update content for AI search? I asked Josh. He told me, “In fast-moving industries, you need to update your content every 3 to 6 months.”
For industries where the information doesn’t change or is a slow mover (think: the medical field), you can get away with updating your content every 6 to nine months.
Bottom line: you need to continually refresh your content to improve your chances of being surfaced in AI results.
The Science Behind AI Freshness
AI visibility depends on how frequently language models see and trust your content.
Most AI engines use a hybrid approach called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which combines their trained data with real-time web information.
When these models fetch results, they look for signals like:
- Last updated timestamps
- Frequency of page changes
- Recent backlinks or mentions
- Topical authority within the last 90–180 days
If your content hasn’t been updated in 6 months, AI models are less likely to treat it as current or relevant. For industries where technology, regulation, or trends shift quickly, neglecting to update your content is basically sending it to an early grave.
What the 3-to-6 Month Rule Actually Means
TL/DR: Freshness is maintaining topical authority through consistent context updates—not complete rewrites.
Spilker’s “3-to-6 Month Rule” isn’t a hard and fast rule. Think of it as a cadence built around how AI engines evolve and retrain.
While you don’t need to rewrite everything from scratch every time you need to update your content for AI search, you do need to go in and touch it in some way.
Here’s what the 3-to-6 Month Rule looks like in practice:
- Every 3 months: Refresh content in fast-moving verticals like SaaS, AI, finance, cybersecurity, or compliance.
- Update screenshots, product names, and tool references.
- Add quotes or data from recent quarters.
- Reflecting language changes.
- Every 6 months: Review evergreen topics, like leadership frameworks, strategy posts, or foundational guides, to confirm relevance and structure.
- Update examples, internal links, or author bios.
- Reassess alignment with new SEO/AI shifts.
When updating your content for AI search, keep these questions in mind:
- Has anything new changed in the way people talk about this topic?
- Are competitors now answering the same question differently?
- Would I be proud if this content were pulled into ChatGPT today?
If the answer is “no,” you know what to do. Update
How to Refresh Content for AI Visibility

Spilker told me that keeping content fresh helps you appear more often in ChatGPT and Perplexity results.
But to keep your content fresh for AI search, you don’t need to completely rewrite every blog post once every quarter. A smarter approach is to treat your content refresh strategy like a surgical operation.
Follow these steps to strategically refresh content for AI visibility:
- Step 1. Audit your content library: Use analytics tools to spot which pages have dropped in impressions, clicks, or engagement.
- Step 2. Identify what to refresh: Prioritize pages that once performed well but now lag. These babies are suffering from AI visibility decay—fix it.
- Step 3. Add something new: AI models notice novelty and newness. Add a current example, a 2025 stat, or an expert quote.
- Step 4. Reformat for clarity: Break up long paragraphs and add bullet lists or subheaders. The easier it is to parse, the better your chances of being cited or summarized.
- Step 5. Re-submit or republish: When you republish, ensure your schema includes an updated version. AI engines and crawlers can sniff out new-ish content faster than you think.
Beyond SEO: How Content Freshness Affects AI Ranking
In traditional SEO, freshness influences recency bias. But in AI search, fresh or updated content influences trust. AI models use recency as a proxy for credibility, especially when human validation is limited.
Updated pages signal:
- An active domain authority: Your website is maintained.
- Relevance: The information reflects current terminology.
- Engagement: Users interact with timely pages more often.
Even subtle updates, like refreshing meta descriptions, citations, or visuals, send strong freshness cues to AI crawlers and visibility APIs.
Building a Sustainable Refresh Cadence
If you’re managing content alone or with a small team, you don’t need to chase every post every quarter. Honestly, who has the time or the bandwidth for that?
Instead, systematize it:
- Quarterly audit: Identify pages 90+ days old.
- Tag “priority refresh” posts based on traffic + topic velocity.
- Plan one refresh sprint every 3 months. 3 to 5 posts per sprint are enough to stay visible.
- Automate tracking: Use AI tools to flag out-of-date references, stats, or schema.
This cadence maintains your presence in both Google rankings and AI search summaries without burning your team out.
Freshness = Visibility in the AI Era
AI search rewards accuracy and active content engines. With AI search changing the game, your content program needs a fresh breath of oxygen every few months.
Updating content every 3 to 6 months keeps your site top of mind for both users and algorithms.
If you haven’t revisited your top 10 posts this quarter, start there. One small update today can keep your content visible in the conversations shaping tomorrow.
