How to Conduct an AI Visibility Audit for Your Website

As more users ask large language models (LLMs) for immediate answers, search behavior is shifting. With AI search changing fast, now is the right time to learn how to run an AI visibility audit.

An AI visibility audit checks whether a site can be crawled, understood, and cited by answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. It focuses on the signals these systems actually rely on, like content structure, schema markup, and trust signals.

In this post, I’ll walk you through a practical AI visibility audit step-by-step, with expert-backed notes from Kristina Frunze, founder and SEO strategist at WebView SEO.

TL;DR: AI engines don’t “rank” content the same way Google does. They assemble answers from sources they can interpret quickly and trust. To appear in AI-generated answers, brands need to ensure their site is clear, connected, and machine-readable, not just keyword-optimized.

Why Optimizing for Traditional Search is No Longer Enough

While Google remains the top search engine, AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are gaining popularity.

AI engines are answer engines. Instead of returning a list of links, they generate a response and pull in a small set of sources they trust enough to cite. That means visibility depends less on ranking position and more on whether a brand’s content is:

  • accessible to crawlers
  • structured so it’s easy to extract
  • supported by schema and entity signals
  • written clearly enough to be summarized accurately

As Frunze explained on Found in AI, “Start with the simplest thing.” That means looking at a site the way an AI system does: as set of text, structure, and signals.

Let’s walk through exactly how to do that.

[Psssst… Here’s the complete guide to AI search visibility.]

Why You Need an AI Visibility Audit

AI engines continually scan and interpret web content. AI crawlers selectively consume content in search of clarity, structure, and trust.

A website can be “SEO-optimized” and still invisible to AI if:

  • AI crawlers are blocked in robots.txt
  • Key content is buried in JavaScript-rendered components
  • Schema is missing or inconsistent
  • Author and organization signals are unclear
  • Brand entities aren’t consistently attributed

Pro tip: Frunze told me the first step is simple: give them access. Many sites accidentally block AI crawlers without realizing it — so check your robots.txt before you do anything else.

Is your Schema actually translating into AI Citations?

Validating your structured data is only the first step. For Series A/B startups and enterprise brands, the real challenge is ensuring that LLMs like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini are correctly mapping your brand entities to high-intent queries.

Most technical SEO strategies are missing the “FSA” link—the gap between your code and your Answer Authority.

How to Conduct an AI Visibility Audit

Conducting an AI visibility audit will help uncover and fix these issues before they limit your discoverability in AI-driven search.

Here’s what to do:

Step 1: Check Crawl Accessibility

Start with the robots.txt file. Think of it as the gatekeeper for whether AI systems can access a website at all.

What to allow (common examples):

  • Googlebot
  • Bingbot
  • GPTBot (OpenAI)
  • Anthropic-AI
  • PerplexityBot

What to check:

  • Does the site block GPTBot or CCBot (Common Crawl)?
  • Do staging environments still have noindex / nofollow settings active?
  • Is the host rate-limiting crawlers (even if robots.txt allows them)?

AI engines rely heavily on crawl permission. If they can’t access a website, a brand won’t show up in generated answers — no matter how good the content is.

Confession: I had no idea where to start writing a robots.txt file. I fed ChatGPT my setup and asked it to generate the file, then walk me step-by-step through adding it to my site. God bless ChatGPT. Simple addition — and yes, I think it helped.

Step 2: Analyze Content Structure

Next, look at how AI bots will read pages.

Audit for:

  • Clear hierarchy: Every page should have one H1, with logical H2s and H3s below.
  • Schema markup: Implement Article, FAQ, and Author schema to make context explicit.
  • Clean HTML: Avoid burying key text inside JavaScript-rendered components.
  • Internal linking: Link related pages to establish semantic clusters.

Think of your site like a knowledge graph. The more clearly pages connect and define relationships, the easier it is for AI systems to understand topical authority and reuse a brand’s content in answers.

Step 3: Evaluate Brand and Author Signals

AI doesn’t trust anonymous content. It looks for authorship, reputation, and consistency.

Check for:

  • Author pages: Include credentials, bios, and verified social links.
  • Organization schema: Add consistent details, like your company name, logo, founding date, and “sameAs” links.
  • About page alignment: Make sure your site’s messaging matches your external profiles.

These trust signals help LLMs associate a brand’s content with a verified entity. Once the AI engines understand what a brand does, they start to trust it more (AKA, cite it in answers).

Step 4: Review AI-Specific Schema and Sitemaps

For AI search visibility, brands need to go beyond SEO basics. That means adding schema types and sitemaps tailored for AI search.

Include:

  • FAQ schema: Pairs perfectly with conversational AI queries.
  • Breadcrumb schema: Improves content relationships.
  • DateModified: Signals recency (AI models love freshness).
  • Sitemap.xml updates: Include all structured content pages (blogs, help articles, guides).

Pro tip: When publising thought leadership content, add Author and CreativeWork schema to reinforce E-E-A-T.

Step 5: Monitor AI Visibility Metrics

Track these metrics every quarter:

MetricWhy It MattersTools to Use
AI Share of Voice (AI SoV)How often does your brand appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini answersZipti.dev, AirOps Visibility, or check manually
Citation FrequencyCounts where your domain is referenced or summarizedManual prompt testing in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini
Brand MentionsUnlinked references in AI-curated summariesTalkwalker, Brand24
Schema ValidationConfirms your markup is crawlableRich Results Test + Schema validation tools

Even if traffic can’t yet be fully attributed to AI engines, brands can still monitor GEO metrics like AI Share of Voice.

AI Share of Voice (AI SoV) describes how much of an AI-generated answer a brand occupies relative to other cited sources. As links are increasingly replaced with citations and recommendations, visibility inside the answer itself becomes the metric to watch.

AI SoV helps answer questions traditional analytics can’t yet show:

  • Are AI systems citing your brand at all?
  • Are you a primary source or a supporting reference?
  • Would your brand disappear if the model re-evaluated sources tomorrow?

I documented what this looks like in practice in a case study tracking AI Share of Voice over a 24-hour window — including how quickly visibility can shift when models reassess trust and structure.

Step 6: Refresh Regularly

AI search ecosystems constantly reassign weight and authority based on signals such as freshness and structure. For brands that want to appear in citations more often, it means they need to maintain a content refresh cycle and publish on a regular cadence.

Current recommendations for AI search: Refresh content every three to 6 months.

Each cycle should include:

  • Reviewing new crawl bots and permission updates.
  • Testing schema performance.
  • Checking how content appears in AI results.
  • Updating metadata and internal links.

A refresh schedule helps the brand stay visible even as AI systems evolve.

How to Think About AI Visibility Going Forward

Optimizing for AI search isn’t a replacement for SEO. Brands still need strong technical foundations, quality content, and backlinks.

What’s changing is how that work shows up.

AI systems don’t browse pages the way people do. They interpret structure, extract meaning, and decide which sources are reliable enough to cite. That means visibility now depends on whether content is easy for models to access, understand, and reuse, not just whether it ranks highly.

AI visibility audits focus on those interpretation signals. If your content already performs well in traditional search, an AI visibility audit helps ensure that work isn’t lost as more discovery happens inside AI-generated answers.

What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit evaluates whether your website can be crawled, understood, and cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. It focuses on structure, schema, crawl access, and trust signals.

How is an AI visibility audit different from a traditional SEO audit?

Traditional SEO audits focus on keyword targeting, indexing issues, and page optimization. AI visibility audits prioritize clarity, structured data, authorship, semantic connections, and ensuring LLMs can interpret your content.

How do I know if AI crawlers can access my site?

Check your robots.txt file for blocked user agents like GPTBot, CCBot, Anthropic-AI, and PerplexityBot. Also confirm your hosting provider isn’t rate-limiting AI crawlers.

Do I really need schema for AI search?

Yes. Schema markup acts as a translation layer for LLMs. Article, FAQ, Author, Organization, and Breadcrumb schema help AI engines understand and trust your content.

How often should I refresh my AI visibility audit?

Refresh every six months. If your industry moves fast or you publish frequently, aim for quarterly updates.

Can I measure AI visibility yet?

Yes. Tools like Zipti.dev and AirOps Visibility track citations and share of voice. You can also run manual prompt tests in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
