Why Digital PR Builds Authority in AI search

How Digital PR Builds Authority in the Age of AI Search

Digital PR is having a moment, as it’s one of the best ways brands can earn AI citations.

Many savvy marketers have caught on to the power of PR for visibility, especially considering that participating in discussions and being quoted in external sources helps establish entity authority.

Recently, I spoke with Chris Panteli, co-founder of Linkifi, to get his take on this. Here’s what he told me.

Why Brand Mentions Help Increase Authority Building

That’s the new purpose of digital PR, and it leans heavily on a core principle of the FSA framework: establishing brand authority in the ecosystems where AI learns.

For years, backlinks were the currency of SEO. The more high-authority links you had, the higher you ranked. For many brands, this meant either making a deal with the people behind high-authority websites to feature their quotes or engaging in backchannel spamming to acquire more links.

But as we learn more about AI crawlers and their behaviors, it appears the crawlers do not prioritize linking. Instead, they care more about trust. Trust is not built solely through backlinks.

As Pantelli explained on Found in AI: “Brands will be the winners in AI search. The more that you can build a trusted brand in your own right, the more likely you are to be surfaced inside large language models.”

Why Does Digital PR Matter for AI Visibility?

Digital PR, when done right, builds backlinks for SEO and expertise that appears on other websites for GEO and AI search.

AI search engines, like ChatGPT and Gemini, rely on large language models (LLMs) trained on massive web datasets. Those models don’t use PageRank like our old pal, Google. Instead, they use probability and trust weighting.

When AI generates an answer, it asks:

  • Which brands consistently appear in credible contexts?
  • Which experts are quoted or referenced in relation to this topic?
  • Which sources align with trusted publishers?

The more a brand is mentioned across the web, the more an AI model begins to associate a brand with a specific topic. And the higher the association, the stronger the brand’s entity.

That’s why brand reputation matters to AI visibility just as much—if not more— than content quality or backlinks ever did.

Is Digital PR helping your brand earn AI Share of Voice?

High-tier backlinks are no longer enough to secure your brand’s authority. For Series A/B startups and enterprise brands, the real battle is now for Answer Authority, ensuring LLMs like Perplexity and Gemini cite your brand instead of a legacy competitor.

How Does Digital PR Increase AI Citations?

Every time a brand is cited in those spaces, it reinforces its semantic footprint (also known as an entity). LLMs examine the brand’s footprint to determine if it is a credible source. If deemed worthy, the brand earns a brand mention or citation inside of those AI answers.

Traditional link building was transactional. Essentially, you write a guest post, they provide you with a link, and you move on.

Digital PR, on the other hand, is a relational approach. It’s about earning credible visibility at scale, the kind that AI can recognize and recall.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

How to Use Digital PR to Boost AI Visibility

Building and strengthening an entity is crucial for AI search visibility. It’s why authority is a principle of the FSA framework, and why it’s part of the AI search visibility playbook.

Implementing a PR strategy is just one way to create an entity. Follow the steps below to boost AI visibility with digital PR.

1. Build a Recognizable Brand Entity

Make it easy for AI to identify your brand across the web.

  • Maintain consistency in your company name, tagline, and tone throughout.
  • Use Organization schema with sameAs links to your social profiles and press pages.
  • Publish author bios and team profiles that link back to your About page.

LLMs learn relationships through repetition. If your brand appears consistently with the *same line everywhere*, it gets recognized faster.

2. Earn Mentions in Credible Publications

Each mention in a credible publication helps build both human awareness and AI association with your niche. Often, journalists and producers look for guests to appear on:

  • Media outlets
  • Podcasts
  • Trade publications
  • Expert roundups

Answering these calls is an easy way to establish your name and brand.

Start small. Respond to journalist requests on sites like:

3. Prioritize Topic Authority Over Link Quantity

A single article in a trusted, topical outlet is more valuable than dozens of irrelevant backlinks. For AI search optimization, quality over quantity is the best approach.

Focus on relevance. If you’re a B2B marketer, get cited in:

  • MarketingProfs
  • HubSpot
  • AdAge

Cassie’s confessions: As a HubSpot contributing writer,  I use Qwoted to obtain high-quality sources for my assignments. Just a little heads up.

AI crawlers favor industry reports, case studies, and other high-value content assets. This is because high-value industry reports are frequently exchanged among company leaders and cited in various blogs, newsletters, or social media posts.

4. Create “Citable” Assets

When others reference your brand, AI crawlers pick up on that association, strengthening your entity.

To signal your brand authority, partner with other brands to publish:

  • Original data
  • Reports
  • Proprietary frameworks.

These attract natural mentions and citations over time, helping to elevate your brand in AI summaries that reference expert insights.

5. Stay Consistent on Owned Channels

AI learns from everything you publish. That includes content published on your:

  • Blog
  • Owned podcast
  • Social media channels

Maintaining a consistent presence on these platforms counts as a brand mention. Shares and engagement across your platforms certainly help. However, even without tons of engagement, AI models still use your own posts to associate your brand with a topic.

How to Measure the Impact of Digital PR

Traditional PR metrics, such as impressions, backlinks, and referral traffic, don’t fully capture AI visibility.

Instead, measure:

MetricWhat It Tells You
AI Share of VoiceHow often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
Unlinked MentionsProof that AI is recognizing and recalling your name.
Search Volume for Brand QueriesIndicates post-mention recall and awareness.
Citation Growth Over TimeShows whether mentions evolve into trusted references.

Remember: You’re no longer chasing clicks. You’re earning recognition.

The Compounding Effect of Trust

PR coverage is a trust-building exercise that fits neatly into the FSA Framework. AI search rewards brands that are known, trusted, and active. If your content, name, and reputation are consistent across the web, AI systems treat you as a reliable source.

That’s how small brands with strong reputations can outrank—and out-visibility—massive companies in AI search.

So stop thinking of digital PR as an optional brand awareness play. Because in the next era of search, the most visible brands won’t just have the best backlinks, they’ll have the strongest reputations.

What is digital PR in the context of AI search?

Digital PR for AI search focuses on earning brand mentions, expert quotes, and credible visibility across trusted publications, podcasts, and media outlets. Unlike traditional PR or link building, the goal is to strengthen your brand’s authority and entity recognition so AI models associate your name with specific topics.

How does digital PR help brands earn AI citations?

AI models look for brands that consistently appear in credible contexts. When your brand is mentioned or quoted across trusted sources, it reinforces your semantic footprint. Over time, this increases the likelihood that AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini will cite your brand in generated answers.

Are backlinks still important for AI visibility?

Backlinks still matter for traditional SEO, but AI search places greater emphasis on trust, relevance, and brand reputation. Unlinked mentions, expert quotes, and repeated association with a topic often carry more weight for AI visibility than raw link quantity.

What types of digital PR placements matter most for AI search?

The most valuable placements are those that are topical, credible, and consistent. Mentions in industry publications, podcasts, expert roundups, original research reports, and authoritative blogs help AI systems understand who you are and what you’re known for.

How does digital PR support the FSA framework?

Digital PR strengthens the Authority component of the FSA framework (Freshness, Structure, Authority). Each credible mention reinforces your brand’s authority signals in the ecosystems where AI learns, helping models recognize your brand as a trusted source.

How can brands measure the impact of digital PR on AI visibility?

Instead of relying solely on impressions or referral traffic, brands should track AI share of voice, unlinked brand mentions, growth in branded search queries, and citation frequency in AI-generated answers over time.
